Count days from a current date to a target event.

Results

Days until target

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter today’s date (current year, month, and day) as accurately as possible.
  2. Enter the target year, month, and day for the event you are counting down to.
  3. Submit the dates to calculate the number of days from today until the target date.
  4. Review the result as days remaining; for an inclusive countdown, mentally add one day if you want to count both today and the event day.
  5. Update the current date as time passes to keep your countdown accurate.

Inputs explained

Current date
Today’s date or the date you want to treat as the starting point for the countdown. Enter year, month, and day using the standard calendar (Gregorian).
Target date
The future date of your event, deadline, or milestone. For recurring events such as birthdays or holidays, use the next upcoming occurrence.

How it works

You enter the current date (year, month, and day) and the future target date you’re counting down to.

We convert both dates into internal timestamps and calculate the difference between them.

We divide that difference by the number of milliseconds in a day to get the days between the two dates, handling leap years and month lengths automatically.

For target dates in the past, the result may be zero or negative, indicating the event has already occurred or is happening today.

For upcoming events, you can optionally treat the result as inclusive (including the target day) by adding one day if that better matches your mental model of a countdown.

Formula

Days until target ≈ (Target date timestamp − Current date timestamp) ÷ (milliseconds per day)\n(Where both dates are converted to midnight timestamps in the same time zone for consistent day-level comparison.)

When to use it

  • Counting down to product launches, marketing campaigns, or client go-live dates.
  • Tracking days until vacations, weddings, holidays, or anniversaries.
  • Monitoring deadlines for applications, project milestones, or paperwork submissions.
  • Creating timelines or visual countdowns for classrooms, teams, or personal goals.

Tips & cautions

  • For recurring events (such as annual holidays or birthdays), make sure you set the year to the next occurrence after the current date.
  • Decide whether you want inclusive or exclusive counting. If you want to include both the starting day and the event day, add 1 to the output.
  • Stick to dates only—this tool does not track hours or minutes. For fine-grained deadlines, use a time-based countdown alongside this daily view.
  • If you are coordinating across time zones, agree on a common calendar date (for example, local date at the event location) to avoid confusion.
  • Requires manual entry of the current date; it does not automatically detect today’s date from your system clock.
  • Assumes valid Gregorian calendar dates; it does not support custom calendars or historical calendar reforms.
  • Operates at the day level only and does not show hours or minutes; rounding is based on full days between dates.
  • Time zones and daylight saving transitions are not modeled explicitly—dates are treated as whole days.

Worked examples

90-day launch countdown

  • Set the current date to your launch planning start date.
  • Set the target date 90 days later.
  • The calculator reports approximately 90 days until launch.

Holiday countdown

  • Set today’s date and choose the date of the next major holiday (for example, December 25).
  • If the holiday has already passed this year, set the target year to next year’s date.
  • Review the days until the holiday and update periodically as the date approaches.

Deep dive

Calculate how many days are left until any event by entering today’s date and your target date—perfect for launches, vacations, exams, or deadlines.

Avoid manual calendar counting and let this date countdown calculator handle leap years and month lengths for you.

Great for planners, project managers, teachers, and anyone who likes to keep a visible countdown to important days.

FAQs

Can the calculator automatically use today’s date?
In this version, you enter the current date manually so the same logic works across environments. A future version may auto-fill today’s date using your device time.
Does the result include the target day itself?
By default, the calculation is based on the difference in full days between the current date and the target date. If you want inclusive counting that includes the event day, simply add 1 to the result.
How does this differ from the date difference calculator?
The date difference calculator is more general and can measure spans both forward and backward in time. This date countdown tool is focused on forward-looking countdowns and is phrased around days "until" a target event.
